Artist Statement My life and my work are always having a dialog. There is a collision of ideas taking place when working with ink, paper and press. Each piece leads me along a path of discovery. The monotype is a painterly, and a fresh spontaneous way of creating. I use various printmaking techniques, alone and in combination, and enjoy layering the colors. All the choices are dictated by the content of each series, and by my continued interest in themes of repetition and replication.Through the use of observations, childhood memories, and current events, even the abstracts are narratives. It is the printing process itself that keeps me interested, along with the artistic problem solving.
Common in the newest series of Monoprints is a reliance upon structure.
A square motif using additive and subtractive methods is repeated often enough in the total composition to make a new dominant feature.
My influence comes from patchwork quilts, stone inlays, pathways, and mosaics. When two ideas that you had previously thought opposites, are reconciled it opens up many possibilities. A giant step takes place when you teach yourself that paradox is simply a natural part of life.
