The Old Hurley Store was built in 1911-1913 by the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp., and called The Santa Rita Store as was it's twin, built that same year in nearby Santa Rita, NM  In 1986, Phelps Dodge acquired the Kennecott properties. 
The Hurley store, which included the payroll office, was built for the convenience of the miners who worked in the nearby Hurley smelting plant and for the other members of the Hurley community.
